How do I practice a language with AI?

Jeff Kaufman used ChatGPT's voice mode and spoke more Spanish in one week than in the previous fifteen years. He found it needs some baseline fluency.

Steps

  1. Open the app's voice mode.
  2. Ask it to speak only in your target language, at your level.
  3. Talk about things you actually care about.
  4. Ask for corrections at the end, not after every sentence.
  5. If it's too fast, ask it to slow down or simplify. Kaufman found this wasn't enough for his weaker Chinese.
