The Federal Trade Commission sent civil investigative demands, a type of civil subpoena, to OpenAI and Anthropic on Oct 14, Axios reported, citing a person familiar with the matter. According to Axios, each demand runs more than 50 pages and seeks documents on security incidents and safeguarding practices, plus marketing materials and privacy policies, in a probe focused on possible consumer protection violations. Axios's source said the FTC also plans to compel top AI executives to testify; Reuters' report on the story names Anthropic, OpenAI and the research group METR. OpenAI told Axios, "We will engage constructively with the FTC." The FTC and Anthropic did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment.

How you’d use it: If you ship consumer AI products in the US, treat this as a reminder that marketing claims, privacy policies and incident response may face fresh FTC scrutiny. Nothing has been confirmed by the FTC itself.
