Google DeepMind and Singapore's GovTech build an on-device Gemma model that flags scam chats

Google DeepMind and the Government Technology Agency of Singapore fine-tuned Google's lightweight Gemma model on local scam conversations, such as impersonations of banks and public officials. The model runs on the phone instead of scanning messages in the cloud, and is meant to warn people to pause before sending money or sensitive details. DeepMind says rollout inside apps will be phased with the Singapore government and only with user consent; no app, launch date or accuracy figures have been published. DeepMind cites scams as over half of Singapore's reported crimes, with more than S$4 billion lost since 2019.
How you’d use it: Messaging apps could warn users mid-chat before they send money to a scammer.
