TIME's Best Inventions of 2026 list includes Google DeepMind's SynthID, an imperceptible watermark for AI-generated images, video, audio and text. DeepMind says the marks are designed to survive crops, filters, compression and other common edits, and that partners including OpenAI, NVIDIA and Kakao already use the system, with Apple expected to follow. A SynthID Detector portal now lets anyone upload a file to check for the watermark, and Gemini, Search and Chrome can also report whether Google AI left a SynthID mark.

How you’d use it: If you need to check whether an image, video or audio clip was made with Google AI or a SynthID partner, open the Detector portal or ask Gemini, Search or Chrome to look for a SynthID watermark.
