Dispute a $1,201.80 dental bill with ChatGPT-drafted insurance appeals

Jamie Phillis used ChatGPT to read her dental bill. It flagged a screening she didn't consent to, two evaluations billed on the same day, and photos charged at seven times the allowed rate. She filed appeals and a state complaint with its help and never paid the $1,200.

What you get

A plain-English read of your bill and EOB, suspicious charges flagged, and appeal and complaint letters formatted to your insurer's rules.

Tools

  • ChatGPT
  • Otter.ai (to transcribe calls)
  • Bill, receipt, explanation of benefits (EOB), insurer appeal instructions

Time / cost: Under a minute per draft, then five revisions (per author)

Steps

  1. Upload the bill and the explanation of benefits, and ask what each charge is and which ones look wrong.
  2. Call your insurer, transcribe the call, and give the transcript to the assistant.
  3. Ask it to draft the appeal following your insurer's exact instructions, then revise it until it's accurate.
  4. If the first appeal is denied, upload the denial and ask about a second-level appeal and a complaint to your state insurance department.

Here are my dental/medical bill [paste], my explanation of benefits [paste], notes from my call with the insurer [paste], and the insurer's appeal instructions [paste].
1. Explain each charge in plain English.
2. Flag charges that look wrong: services I didn't consent to, codes that can't be billed together on the same day, amounts above the allowed rate, network problems.
3. Work out what I should owe based on allowed amounts and my coinsurance.
4. Draft an appeal letter that follows the instructions exactly, plus mailing instructions. Mark anything you're unsure about.

Watch out: Her first appeal was denied. The case was never formally resolved; the dental office simply stopped billing her.
