Let your AI agent do the bookkeeping legwork in Dougs while you approve every change

Tom Eberle open-sourced dougs-cli (MIT), an unofficial command-line tool for the French accounting platform Dougs, so an agent can work in his company's books. On his real books in one afternoon he reports uncategorised operations going from 183 to 4, 22 missing invoices pulled from Gmail and attached, about 60 changes written and 3 overdue VAT returns surfaced. Nothing reaches Dougs until he approves the plan.

Try it yourself

What you get

Missing receipts attached, foreign-software VAT and categories corrected, and overdue returns flagged in your Dougs books, with every change shown to you first.

Tools

  • dougs-cli (open source, MIT, npm)
  • Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or any agent that runs commands
  • A Dougs account
  • Gmail (read-only) for invoices

Time / cost: One afternoon for the first cleanup, per the author; README estimates ~1 h → ~10 min for about 20 receipts

Steps

  1. Install Node.js 22.13+ and run npm i -g dougs-cli, then dougs login.
  2. Ask your agent the author's starter prompt below.
  3. Review the list it proposes: receipt matches, VAT fixes, new rules.
  4. Approve or reject each batch; file the VAT return yourself in Dougs.

Copy-ready prompt

Help me do my accounting with npm i -g dougs-cli and tell me what needs attention in my books.

Prompt quoted verbatim from @eberle_tom’s public post. Check the output yourself and approve before anything is sent or bought.

Watch out: Unofficial and not affiliated with Dougs; it logs in with your Dougs password. It does not file returns or replace your accountant. Only for Dougs users; review every plan.

In their words

Nothing reaches Dougs until I approve the plan. Months with a filed VAT return are never touched, every write is read back and checked, and the password only goes to Dougs. It doesn't file the VAT return or replace the accountant. It does the legwork.
